Former Neighbours actor Daniel MacPherson has revealed that a spin-off series for his character Joel Samuels, Toadie Rebecchi (Ryan Moloney) and Lance Wilkinson (Andrew Bibby) almost happened.
Following the news that the long-running Australian soap is ending this year, the star – who appeared on the soap between 1998 and 2002 – reflected on some of his memories of the show.
Taking to Twitter, MacPherson posted a long thread about how Neighbours launched his career, recalling how he landed the part of Joel aged 17 and had to move to Melbourne.

"I spent most of my time in Melbourne from 17 to 21 running around in Speedos, or some form of Lycra," he joked. "With various versions of basically a blonde perm (and nipple ring – since departed) but slowly I learnt a bit about acting."
He then revealed: "Toadfish, Lance and Joel almost got a spin off – no shit".

Speaking further about how Neighbours changed his life, MacPherson explained: "It set me off on an adventure that is still going to this day. 25 years later, that kid that knew nothing was working with an Oscar winner last week."

He also revealed how the producers pushed him to stay on the show when he planned to leave after three and a half years, suggesting he remain to work on his craft rather than head straight out into the world.
"25 years later, I still remember sitting in that office, being told by two old guys that I wasn't gonna make it," he recalled. "Little did they know they were sparking up a fire that would become the adventure of a lifetime Thank you gents. Truly. Thank you Joel. Thank you Neighbours".
Following the official confirmation of Neighbours' cancellation yesterday (March 3), a number of other stars have responded to the news, including Alan Fletcher (Dr Karl Kennedy), Takaya Honda (David Tanaka), Freya Van Dyke (Zara Selwyn) and Lucinda Cowden (Melanie Pearson).
However, ahead of the finale this summer, a number of past faces will be coming back, including Ian Smith as Harold Bishop and reportedly Peter O'Brien as Shane Ramsay.
Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK) and Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).
