Home and Away star Axle Whitehead has explained his decision to leave the soap, insisting that it was the right time for his character Liam Murphy to bow out.

The actor finished filming with the Summer Bay show late last year and his final scenes aired on Australian screens last week.

Liam's exit storyline, which hits UK screens later this month, sees him say goodbye to the Bay to reconnect with his son Ash.

Whitehead told TV Week: "Liam had done all he needed to do in the Bay. He had no intention of staying until he fell in love with all these women.

"It felt the right time for him to go and find his son. He'd exhausted every opportunity to get his life back on track while in the Bay."
