The Paratas have spent their first night sleeping rough in their car. They try to put on a brave face for each other, but it's obvious their predicament is taking its toll. Nikau heads off to look for work, leaving Ari and Gemma alone. They let their guard drop and admit they're both finding it tough. Unbeknown to them, a passing Marilyn has witnessed their new living conditions.
Gemma is fragile, struggling with feeling so helpless to help her family and her pride gets in the way when Marilyn gently suggests that the family move in with her. She's given pause for thought though when she gets a call from her husband's brother, Tane. Even he can sense things aren't okay.
Gemma swallows her pride and puts her family's needs first, accepting Marilyn's kind offer. Marilyn is delighted to have a chance to help her friends, but John doesn't take kindly to finding another family sprawled across his living room. Marilyn refuses to engage in his protests.

Having learned of the Paratas' predicament, Roo seizes an opportunity to help without it feeling like charity, so she recruits Nik to help her do some heavy lifting at the Bait Shop. Having been coaxed into a day's work, Nikau is shocked when Roo pays him in cash and offers ongoing casual work at the bait shop.
Meanwhile, Ryder is suspicious of a very glamorous Mackenzie's change in look. Mac reluctantly admits that she has got a blind date set up but swears Ryder to secrecy. The last thing she wants is for Dean or Colby to find out.
Much to Mac's dismay, Dean is uncharacteristically perceptive to her evasive behaviour and forces the truth out of Ryder. It's just as well when Mac's date turns up and it's her ex, Jason, here to extort money from her.
