EastEnders will return filming by the end of June.

The soap shut down production in March amid the coronavirus pandemic, and has cut down on its weekly episodes from four to two in order to stay on air.

However, the BBC's director of content Charlotte Moore has now confirmed plans for EastEnders to resume production within weeks.

"We've been looking carefully at how we can safely put some of our shows back into production, and I'm pleased to announce that we plan to begin filming again on both EastEnders and Top Gear by the end of June," she wrote in The Daily Telegraph. "We're also exploring ways to restart shooting on dramas and other major BBC shows."

Moore explained that they "will work within government guidelines", with crews being limited and cast members doing their own hair and make-up, as well as social distancing measures being employed.

A post on the show's Twitter account also confirmed: "EastEnders will resume filming at the end of June. Strict social distancing measures will be in place. We’ll be announcing more news soon."

Digital Spy understands that makeup artists will still be on hand - both socially distanced on set and via video link - to check the cast's handiwork. They will also be offering tutorials on how to do their looks and any special effects makeup, like cuts and bruises.

"We want to serve our audiences and help TV production get back on its feet, but the priority remains the safety and well-being of production teams and those who work with them," Moore added.

"How we make shows will continue to evolve as lockdown is eased and government advice develops. But we all want the whole industry to safely return to production. Our shared goal is to find new ways of working to help fire up the engines of British TV production safely and sensibly."

Earlier this week, the UK government issued new guidance on lockdown measures, with the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport confirming that film and TV production were permitted to restart, as long as all colleagues are able to safely adhere to social-distancing rules.

"The government is working closely with the screen sector to understand how different types of productions can comply with social-distancing guidelines, and give confidence to people in the TV and film industries that there are safe ways in which they can return to work," a DCMS spokesperson said.

It was reported earlier this month that EastEnders would resume production in June, though the soap clarified at the time: "No dates have been set for filming to resume and we will not return until it is safe to do so."

EastEnders is currently airing on Monday and Tuesday evenings on BBC One.
