As the situation escalates, Jenny starts to open up about her tragic past in which her son Tom drowned when left unattended.

Speaking about next week's scenes, Matthews addressed her hope that fans would be able to sympathise with her troubled character.

She said: "Twitter and Facebook were quite a scary place to be when Jenny slapped Maria so what it's going to be like in the next few weeks is anyone's guess!

"I hope they see that there is a genuine reason for her behaviour and from the reaction so far I think the viewers will have sympathy for her situation.

"She isn't Machiavellian! She isn't twiddling her moustache and drawing up plans. She is deeply traumatised about the death of her son and is reacting rather than acting."

Matthews also believes that Kevin is the one person who will be able to get through to Jenny, adding that her character does have genuine feelings for him.

She said: "She's known Kevin for a long time and she does care for him deeply. He holds the key.

"She cares about him a great deal actually, but because she isn't seeing things as they really are she can only see him as an obstacle in her desire to keep Jack safe."

Coronation Street will air the kidnap scenes on Monday, June 15 at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
