Coronation Street star Gabrielle Glaister eyes new soap role

Coronation Street star Gabrielle Glaister has revealed she is eyeing up a new role in another soap ahead of her exit as Fern Lindon.

The character is currently scheming her way through Weatherfield, posing as lookalike Bernie Winter as she stole bundles of jewellery totalling over a thousand pounds.

Ahead of her exit storyline, Glaister talked to TV Times about the narrative arc, and what soap she’d like to appear on next.

“I have no idea [what I’m going to do next]. I’m struggling with empty nest syndrome as my son’s gone off to university, so somebody needs to give me a job,” she said.

“I love doing telly and I love soaps. I’ve done Family Affairs and Emmerdale, as well as Corrie and Brookside, but I haven’t done EastEnders yet – I’d definitely consider it. It sounds dull, but I just love working.”

Glaister, who played Patricia Farnham in Brookside from 1995 to 2000, also referenced the current storyline in Corrie, which came about as a result of Glaister being mistaken for co-star Jane Hazlegrove.

Both stars said the mistaken identity has been happening for years, with each actress regularly being congratulated for the other’s work by fans.

Talking about how the humorous storyline came about, Glaister said: “It was April last year when my agent phoned me about it. My initial response was ‘That’s silly!’ I was concerned about people going ‘but you’re Debs!’ because I was previously in Corrie.

“But hey, I’m an actor, and actors play different roles. It was a bit of a gamble, but I think it has really worked, and we’ve had a lovely time filming it,” she said. “We’d met briefly once before… but we’re firm friends now.”
