Coronation Street has announced that the cast and crew have returned to work, following a two-month filming gap.

The ITV soap suspended production in late March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

New protocols and safety measures – which meet the new TV production guidelines – are in place and will be followed on set, with the production team going through a health and safety induction today (June 1).

Filming will resume next Tuesday (June 9) in Manchester, and will initially produce three episodes per week – meaning that there are no plans for Corrie to go off air.

During this initial period, cast and crew over the age of 70 or with an underlying health condition will not be present on set.

Temperature checks by specialised medical advisors will be carried out every day on everyone, alongside daily intensive cleaning and sanitisation.

Make-up and costume will work remotely, and crew members will use their own assigned equipment. A cohort system will also see crew members assigned to a specific studio or the exterior lot.

"The whole team at Coronation Street has pulled together to generate an ingenious, intricate set of protocols to allow filming to restart as safely as humanly possible," producer Iain MacLeod said.

"We are really pleased to be able to resume making the nation's favourite soap at a time when people need the reassurance of their regular Corrie fix more than ever. Safety remains our number one priority and we are under no illusions about the challenges still facing us and the nation as a whole.

"However, I can assure viewers that Corrie's ever-present humour and brilliant storytelling will be there in abundance in the episodes due to begin filming next week and beyond."

Coronation Street currently airs Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 7.30pm on ITV.
