Coronation Street star Nathan Graham has opened-up about his character James Bailey's coming out storyline and on-screen father Ed's reaction to it.
In scenes that aired last night (February 19), James emotionally came out to his father, and while the latter seemingly accepted, things changed when he told Ed that he was dating Danny.
Ed later threatened Danny, and after overhearing his rant James and his father argued, the latter admitting he is disappointed in his son, causing James to storm out. Ed also made his homophobic views clear to an upset Aggie, who went out to find her son.
Appearing on today's (February 20) Lorraine, Nathan spoke about his reaction to Ed's homophobic scenes.
"I think it was important to show that Ed looked like he accepted it, but then it is truthful to show that it isn't quite accepted in some families," he said. "To show him struggling with it is a good thing to highlight."
"I feel like we're tackling two things," he further explained of the storyline. "There's the racism element and the homophobia element as well. So for James, he has kind of both to deal with at the same time.

"And to highlight both issues is really important. Discrimination is discrimination, whether its racism [or] homophobia, its all in the same bracket, and neither one is more important than the other."
Meanwhile, in a chat with Digital Spy, Aggie actress Lorna Laidlaw admitted that the storyline is set to get "darker".
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights at 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
