Coronation Street bosses are lining up a surprising culprit in an arson storyline to play out in 2019.

It was recently reported that the plot will see Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) racing to the rescue of son Simon (Alex Bain) when the teen passes out from smoke inhalation on a boat that's been set ablaze on the canal.

Digital Spy and other media recently chatted with producer Iain MacLeod about Corrie's New Year storylines, and he revealed that the boat fire and the upcoming Underworld roof collapse are both linked.

"The boat fire will cleverly tie in with the roof collapse story," he teased. "In how it's set up, the identity of the 'arsonist' is a bit of a surprise. It is very left field and is somebody who is having some troubles of their own.

"That's partly another story where we will see relationships imploding — Peter and Carla will be more estranged than you've ever seen them. There's near death jeopardy in there so it's a really weird, interesting story — in terms of the identity of the 'arsonist', especially."

Viewers will already know that Peter and Carla are once again on the outs over Peter's shocking decision to quit the factory, thus leaving his business partner high and dry.
