Kat & Alfie: Redwater stars Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace appear to be divided over whether they'll ever return to EastEnders.

The longtime on-screen pair left Albert Square for their own spin-off drama, which brings Kat and Alfie to a seaside Irish village in search of Kat's long-lost son.

To promote Thursday's (May 18) Redwater premiere, Shane and Jessie stopped by The One Show – where presenter Angela Scanlon asked them if they'd ever be back on EastEnders should their series be a hit.

A coy Jessie Wallace initially answered: "Never say never."

"We were talking about this," Shane Richie added. "I hate the thought of never going back to EastEnders. I'd love to see how we can marry the two somehow."

That bit of positivity was certainly encouraging, but Jessie then slyly chimed back in: "I'm happy in Ireland!"

Redwater shares so much of its DNA with parent series EastEnders, not just because it's based around the Kat and Alfie characters – it's also written and produced by ex-EastEnders producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins.

While Shane Richie has hinted that there will only be passing mentions of Albert Square in Redwater, Treadwell-Collins recently promised that reverberations from their show will be felt in EastEnders.

"I've made sure that everything said on EastEnders has been tying in with Redwater," he told Digital Spy. "I still speak to EastEnders now and I believe that Sharon Batten has put a little reference to it in the main show."

Kat & Alfie: Redwater airs on Thursdays at 8pm on BBC One.
