Spider-Man: Homecoming has swung straight to the top of the US box office, smashing its opening weekend and outselling the rest of the top ten with ease.

The Marvel and Sony collaboration took more than $117m in its opening weekend – taking the lead for the largest opening weekend introducing a character into the MCU, topping Iron Man's $98.6m in 2008 (if you don't account for inflation).

Given every Spider-Man movie released in the 21st century has topped the US box office on opening weekend, the fact that Tom Holland's debut as Peter Parker has soared to the top of the charts within days probably isn't that much of a surprise.

But how does Homecoming fare when measured against the US opening weekends of the other Spider-Man movies? Well, here are the Spidey-stats...

According to Box Office Mojo, Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker in Spider-Man 3 (yes, you heard us, Spider-Man 3) blew them all out of the water.

That movie took a huge $151m on its opening weekend back in 2007 and went on to take $336.5 million in the US alone.

So although Tom Holland's Spidey isn't quite top of the class on this ranking, Homecoming has still made a mark as the second largest opening ever for a Spider-Man feature.

Not a bad effort at all.

Maguire's debut as Peter Parker in the 2002 film ranks third on the US opening weekend list for Spider-Man movies, taking $115m.

That's followed by the Andrew Garfield-starring The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014, which took just over $91m in its first days at US cinemas.

The fifth most successful Spidey outing on opening weekend is Spider-Man 2 in 2004, which managed just over $88m.

And rounding off the character's franchise is The Amazing Spider-Man, which took in $62m during its first weekend in US cinemas back in 2012.

We'll have to wait and see how Homecoming does in the battle of the Spider-Man movies. Can Tom Holland's debut become the highest-grossing Spider-Man movie of all time? Time will tell...
