Normal People's Paul Mescal is returning to screens, this time leading the film God's Creatures, along with Apple Tree Yard and The Theory of Everything's Emily Watson and Game of Thrones' Lyanna Stark, Aisling Franciosi.

Described as 'rural gothic', the film is set in a small fishing village that is rocked by an accusation levelled at Mescal's character, Brian O'Hara. His mother Aileen covers for him by telling the authorities that he was with her at the time.

But it looks like that was a lie, and a young woman named Sarah tries to get Aileen to admit it. Meanwhile, Aileen tries to get through to her son, but he seems to blame her for all of his problems.

The trailer doesn't say what it was that Brian is accused of, but it certainly makes it appear like there's something sinister about him. The quoted reviews (from its appearance at the Cannes Film Festival) in the trailer highlight that, but this is an A24 film, so maybe not everything is as it seems?

Although this film is part of Mescal's move to big-screen features, he recently admitted that he has no plans to start appearing in blockbusters, preferring to stick to indie films.

"I’m very happy with films that I'm getting to make right now, that's a wheelhouse I feel like I'm more comfortable in right now in my life and what I want," he said.

"There's nothing that I'm yearning to do. But at the minute I read it, I'll know in my head."

God's Creatures has a US cinematic release date of September 30, with a UK release date to be confirmed.
