Luke Skywalker will be far from the hopeful and altruistic hero we remember in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Although he was once the keeper of the Force and the one entrusted to awaken a generation of Jedi, Luke (Mark Hamill) has instead exiled himself to the remote Ahch-To and now believes that "it's time for the Jedi to end".

That's where we find Luke at the beginning of Star Wars: The Last Jedi as the Resistance's newest recruit Rey (Daisy Ridley) begs for his help in the war against The First Order.

"The fact that Luke says, 'I only know one truth. It's time for the Jedi to end…' I mean, that's a pretty amazing statement for someone who was the symbol of hope and optimism in the original films," Mark Hamill told Entertainment Weekly.

"When I first read it, my jaw dropped, What would make someone that alienated from his original convictions? That's not something that you can just make up in an afternoon, and I really struggled with this thing."

His demand to be left alone is definitely discouraging for Rey, especially since she'd already earned the trust of Luke's sister Leia (Carrie Fisher) and dearly departed friend Han Solo (Harrison Ford).

What to Read Next

"I don't think one girl, who he doesn't know, turning up with a lightsaber is gonna make him go, 'Oh, shit, yeah, of course I'll get back into the action'," Daisy Ridley explained.

The mischievous Hamill then teased: "But does he not know her?"

Whether Luke knows Rey or not, he will be taking her to the ruins of the very first Jedi temple — but is he trying to teach her to embrace the Force within or convince her that it really is time for the Jedi to end?

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be hitting our screens until December 15. Watch a trailer below:
