Not content with debuting as Marvel's 15th straight No.1 box office hit in the US last week, Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2 has spent the week working steadily towards smashing another box office milestone.
Guardians 2 dominated the US box office with a $145 million opening last week and, following its UK premiere at the end of April, it's taken just about two weeks to cross over into the half a billion dollar mark.
It hit a global box office tally of $500 million on Wednesday (May 10), according to Deadline – which is a very solid effort indeed for Star-Lord and the gang.
The Guardians sequel is Marvel's fifth biggest opening so far, and is well on its way to hitting the $1 billion mark before it bows out of cinemas, which would make it one of Marvel's most successful films of all time.
So far, just four other Marvel movies have managed to hit that threshold: 2012's The Avengers, 2013's Iron Man 3, 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron and 2016's Captain America: Civil War.
So Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 will be in very good company if and when it does manage to rake in that much dosh.

The film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper and Karen Gillan as the Guardians find themselves on the run from a race of 'perfect' beings called the Sovereign, before they later hook up with Star-Lord's long-lost father, Ego the Living Planet.
A third Guardians of the Galaxy film has already been announced, with director James Gunn recently saying that the three films together will make up one overarching storyline.
"I think really that the three movies work together as a whole," he told Entertainment Weekly last month. "They're going to tell one story."
And, we imagine, make a whole lot of money too.
