Kurt Russell is circling a major role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.

His rumoured character could solve one of Guardians of the Galaxy's biggest mysteries – so look away now if you want to remain spoiler-free...

Russell has emerged as James Gunn's choice to play Star-Lord's (Chris Pratt) father in the highly-anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, reports Deadline.

There has been much speculation about who Star-Lord's father actually is – and there are no hints yet about Kurt Russell's character.

In the pages of Marvel Comics, Star-Lord's father is the galaxy-hopping alien Jason of Spartax – although there is no indication Marvel Studios will go down that route.

Russell's potential casting comes on the heels of reports that Oldboy star Pom Klementieff will play the ass-kicking Mantis in Vol 2.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is released on May 5, 2017.
