You'll almost certainly know that the original Mary Poppins film's Bert the Chimney Sweep was played by actor Dick Van Dyke – after all, his 'Cockney' accent is the stuff of legend.

The bigger fans amongst you might also be aware that Van Dyke actually played a second role under a whole heap of make-up, as he starred as uptight banker Mr Dawes Sr too.

We can't imagine anyone else in that role now, but Van Dyke has revealed that it wasn't easy to secure the part. In fact, he had to pay Walt Disney for the privilege.

Speaking to Lin-Manuel Miranda, who stars in the upcoming Mary Poppins Returns, in an ABC 20/20 special, Van Dyke said: "I had to go to Walt and ask him for the part. He wouldn't give it to me. I said, 'I'll do it for nothing'.

"Actually, I had to give him $4,000 — I paid him to do the part."

Thankfully there are no hard feelings, as the actor revealed that he had no regrets and added: "And I'd do it again!"

Van Dyke will appear in the new Mary Poppins – this time playing Mr Dawes Jr, who was played in the 1964 film by Arthur Malet – although it's unlikely that he'll be wheeling out his London accent again.

Last year, he apologised for "the most atrocious cockney accent in the history of cinema".

Meanwhile, Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall has recently said that he feels the movie is "something we need so badly" in today's world.

"We live in such a fragile time, that we need this film. I certainly felt that I needed it," he said. "I needed to turn off the news and be launched into a magical world where wondrous things can happen still, and there's hope."
