Ocean's 8 director Gary Ross has shed some light on those missing cameos, including one from Matt Damon who starred in the original Ocean's trilogy.

It had been speculated that Damon's cameo was dropped from the all-female spin-off following some of his controversial remarks regarding the repercussions of sexual harassment and assault that sparked a petition to remove him from the film, however these claims are currently unconfirmed.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Gary Ross said that the cut cameos were due to an extended shooting schedule, which took place after the film had wrapped, along with "storytelling" reasons.

"[Picking the cameos] is an eclectic process of: how does it fit in the story and how is the narrative unfolding?

"This more than any movie I've done had a really copious editorial process where you play with stuff, you find stuff. I've never shot anything after I've wrapped on any other movie before, but in a heist movie and an ensemble movie, you're still working on the play. And we did a bunch of that, and so that was satisfying as well."

Regarding Matt Damon's cameo specifically, Gary Ross said: "There were a lot of people who were gracious to us that just for editorial and storytelling reasons didn't make it in and some who did.

"If you know, we ended up shooting probably another 10 days afterwards, so there's a lot of material and a lot of shaping. But it really just comes to storytelling."

Speaking to Collider about the proposed cameo last year, Damon was quick to say that it would only be small and for "exposition".

He said: "I haven't filmed it yet - it's just quick a little cameo - yeah, I think I'm there for exposition - we're all about girls power, we want to see what these ladies do. The movie has got some of my favourite actresses in it."

Ocean's 8 hits UK cinemas on 18 June 2018 and is out now in the US.
