In the last few years, Martin Freeman has gone from being the star of The Office and ITV's Hardwareto having some of the biggest geek franchises on his CV, having acted in Sherlock, The Hobbit trilogy and Marvel's Black Panther.

But there's still the granddaddy of geekdom to conquer: Star Wars.

On the promo trail for the latest MCU blockbuster, Freeman was sat with co-star Andy Serkis: one of the very few actors to have starring roles in the Tolkien, Marvel and Star Wars hat-trick (Richard Armitage being another, fact fans) – so it wasn't long before someone asked when Freeman would do the same.

When JOE.ie asked him if he was interested in joining a galaxy far, far away, he said: "Of course I'd be," before revealing it almost happened.

"I had a chat with the folks a few years ago," he said. "But no, it's not been a direct thing. There are other British actors that they prefer to me."

Who knows which film he's on about when he says a few years ago – it could be anything from The Force Awakens to Rogue One to even Revenge of the Sith.

Freeman DID appear in a Star Wars-themed Children in Need sketch, where he failed to do a basic Yoda impression but showed off some impressive Force powers (OK, he tried to lift R2-D2 but almost ended up killing Tom Daley).
