There are many kinds of comedy, from witty repartee to slapstick. But one of the most hilarious and hard-to-watch approaches to humour is the awkwardly embarrassing skit that just refuses to end.
We predict that you'll be covering your eyes and/or tearing out your hair before you're halfway through these excruciating scenes.
What to Read Next
11. The Inbetweeners Movie – How to dance in clubs
It's bad enough being the first people on the dancefloor (no-one wants that), but this scene from the Inbetweeners' holiday demonstrates how it's absolutely fatal if you start thinking about how you're dancing. "Frankly, this is just humiliating for everyone involved."
10. Fargo – Mike Yanagita
Frances McDormand's Marge Gunderson desperately tries to remain upbeat and polite in the face of her old school friend's combination come-on and breakdown about his late wife. We don't know whether to laugh, cry, or hide behind a cushion.
Fun fact: this scene has absolutely no bearing on the plot at all.
9. Wanderlust – Talk to the mirror
We love Paul Rudd, but after this excruciating session where his character George psyches himself up in the mirror before sex, you'll never want to hear him say the word "dick" again.
8. American Pie – Pie sex
The fingering of the pie is bad enough, but the horrifically mangled metaphor just gets worse from there. We never want our dad to have to be as understanding as Jim's when he walks in on him making what can literally be considered 'sweet love'.
7. Bridesmaids – Speeches
Kristen Wiig's Annie and Rose Byrne's Helen teach us a valuable lesson about what happens when you try to make a touching wedding speech all about you. It's not pretty.
6. Romy and Michele – Impressing the bullies
We all dreamed of wowing our school bullies with how cool and successful we are, but it's up to Romy to discover what a horrible idea that is when she lies about inventing the Post-it. At least she's got a phone, right?
5. There's Something About Mary – Zipped
It's fraught enough taking your dream girl to prom and having to meet her parents without getting your willy stuck in the zip of your suit and having to be taken away in an ambulance. One of the many memorable and icky gross-outs in this Farrelly brothers comedy.
4. Movie 43 – Hugh Jackman
The infamous "Hugh Jackman has balls on his neck" scene works on two levels. There's plenty of cringe to be found as Kate Winslet's character seems to be the only one to notice there's something 'off' – and more in just watching two beloved actors debasing themselves in a film that one critic branded "the Citizen Kane of awful".
3. Taxi Driver – First date
While a trip to the cinema is a perfectly acceptable first date, you might want to think about the content of the film you choose. Hint: hardcore porn might not be to everyone's taste.
2. Swingers – Voicemails
Cover your eyes in horror as Mike Peters (Jon Favreau) leaves six increasingly confessional voicemails on poor, unsuspecting Nikki's answering machine. This turns out as well for him as you might expect.
1. Borat – Dinner party
Sacha Baron Cohen, pretending to be a Kazakh journalist, attends a posh dinner party in the American South and pretends he thinks one of the guests has said he's a 'retard', rather than being 'retired'. Later he goes for a loo break and comes back with his poo in a bag.
All the more excruciating for the fact that first, this all actually happened, and second, his hosts are going out of their way to be accommodating, sensitive and respectful. Kind of unwatchable, actually.
