Thor's Chris Hemsworth has chopped off his luscious Asgardian locks ahead of his appearance in Thor: Ragnarok.

This troubling news comes as the Thor threequel (Thoreequel?) had a preview in this week's issue of Entertainment Weekly.

Speaking to the magazine about his makeover, Chris explained: "It was nice not to have to sit in the make-up chair for that hour each morning.

"It felt like a rebirth for me as the actor, but also as the character."

The magazine has also dropped some exciting additional photos on in its Instagram page - including the return of Tom Hiddleston as Loki and a first look at Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster:

The new movie – which will also feature Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange – will retread some of the ground from the Planet Hulk comics, with Thor facing off against his former ally in a gladiatorial-style battle on a planet called Sakaar.

The Avengers' pin-up will also be facing off against Hela, the Goddess of Death (Cate Blanchett). She flanks Thor on the cover, along with Tessa Thompson, who'll play his ally Valkyrie.

This is our first look at Hela and she looks pretty menacing in her all-green ensemble (it's a bit Rita Repulsa from Power Rangers, right?) and you'll notice Thor is packing two fearsome looking swords rather than his classic hammer.

This could mean he's separated from Mjolnir – and perhaps his powers – for some of the movie.

Speaking about her role, Blanchett said: "She's been locked away for millennia getting more and more cross, and then, with a mistake, she gets unleashed and she ain't getting back in that box.

"[Sakaar is] basically where every wormhole across the universe dumps out its trash, so you get people from all walks of life with all sorts of incredible abilities and powers.

"No one cares what prince or king Thor may have been in another world. Also, his strength is pretty easily matched with those he finds himself amongst."

Chris Hemsworth also explained that the tone has shifted slightly for the movie, as it incorporates more comedy thanks to new director Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows), and probably thanks to some of the hilarious shorts featuring Thor and his roommate Darryl.

Elsewhere we know that Thor 3 won't be heading to Earth much – so don't expect any cameos from Natalie Portman's Jane Foster, especially after she said she's "done" with Marvel.
