X-Men Apocalypse director Bryan Singer has hinted that there may be more to the Jean Grey and Scott Summers storyline than just a budding romance.

Jean and Cyclops were the resident couple in the original X-Men films and in The Last Stand (2006) Jean's storyline was developed even more when, as in the original comics, she became possessed by Phoenix, unleashed by Magneto to wage war on the X-Men.

In the prequel, released this summer, we see the two teenagers meet for the first time as they are both struggling with their new mutant identities in Apocalypse.

But judging from Singer's comment to Entertainment Weekly, we could see a glimpse of Phoenix come out too.

"In the beginning, she's the last thing he's interested in," he says.

"When he first comes to the mansion, Scott's blind so he can't see her. Suddenly he gets some glasses and now he can see her and he's like 'Oh! That's Jean Grey.' Both of them are misfits in a way.

"Other mutants have settled in with their powers. This is all new to Scott Summers and he doesn't like it and he doesn't like school.

"And Jean, she has not only has her telekenisis and her telepathy but she also knows inherently that something darker and more powerful is growing inside her and she doesn't quite know what it is."

We bet she'll find out pretty soon, though.

Jean is played by Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner while Scott is played by Tye Sheridan.

'The Dark Phoenix Saga' is one of the most iconic stories ever told in superhero comics.

X-Men Apocalypse is released May 19.
