This, of course, picks up just where The Force Awakens left off, with Daisy Ridley's Rey meeting Mark Hamill's Luke in his self-imposed exile and inviting him back to the fold.

John Boyega revealed at this year's BAFTA Awards that today (February 15) was to be his first shooting day on the hugely-anticipated follow-up, as principal photography starts at Pinewood Studios.

Much of the principal cast is also returning: Boyega, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis will all be back.

The newcomers joining them include Benicio del Toro, rising star Kelly Marie Tran, and Laura Dern, who had not previously been announced.

Not much to go on, then, but it's still an exciting time for fans. Star Wars: Episode VIII, under whatever title it eventually acquires, will hit  cinemas in the UK on December 15, 2017.

Meanwhile, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story arrives this December 16 to keep us going.
