Pitch Perfect star Adam Devine has revealed he was told that he was dying by doctors last year.

Devine, who plays Bumper Allen in the musical-comedy franchise, shared during an appearance on In Depth with Graham Bensinger that he has been dealing with “chronic pain” for the past few years, sharing his belief that the condition stems from a childhood accident.

After visiting his doctor, the actor shared that he was diagnosed with Stiff-person syndrome (SPS) - also known as Moersch-Woltman syndrome -,with the condition causing progressive muscle stiffness and spasms.

“When your muscles get so tight that you can no longer walk, you can no longer move - then your heart will stop beating because your heart is a muscle,” explained Devine. “It gets too tight to beat, and then you die.

“And so essentially the average life expectancy is six years. for a while, [doctors] told me I was dying. Literally within this last year they told me that,” he shared, adding that the diagnosis came a month before the birth of his son, Beau.

After being referred to a specialist in the field of SPS, Devine was relieved to hear that he was not suffering from the condition, but rather that his current affliction is the residual effect of a childhood accident, in which he broke every bone in his body after being hit by a cement truck.

“It’s been a nightmare,” said Devine of his current routine. “It hurts to sit for too long, it hurts to stand for too long, it hurts to walk for too long. I have to foam roll two-three times a day, I have to do stretches two-three times a day.”
