The anticipated Legend of Zelda movie has finally confirmed a release date, though fans will be in for quite a wait.

A live-action adaptation of the iconic Nintendo video game franchise was first confirmed in November 2023, with Maze Runner director Wes Ball helming the project.

While details on plot and cast are under wraps for now, Nintendo has confirmed on its new app Nintendo Today that the movie will be released on March 26, 2027 – almost exactly two years' time.

The Zelda movie is set to be written by Jurassic World's Derek Connolly, while Ball is co-producing alongside Joe Hartwick Jr, franchise co-creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad.

The greenlighting of the project came after the success of The Super Mario Bros Movie, which took over $1.3 billion at the box office.

The Zelda franchise typically follows hero Link and Princess Zelda as they adventure to save the land of Hyrule from Ganon.

Many of the games are considered among the greatest of all time, with the most-recent entries Echoes of Wisdom and Tears of the Kingdom released in 2024 and 2023, respectively.

Announcing the movie in 2023, Miyamoto said: "I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films.

"I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it."

Nintendo added: "By getting deeply involved in the movie production with the aim to put smiles on everyone’s faces through entertainment, Nintendo will continue its efforts to produce unique entertainment and deliver it to as many people as possible."

The Legend of Zelda movie will be released in cinemas on March 26, 2027.
