Paul Mescal is set to star in the upcoming Beatles biopic films.

The Gladiator II actor was previously rumoured to be playing the role of Paul McCartney in the four films being directed by Sam Mendes, with his involvement in the project now confirmed by director Ridley Scott.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, in a panel conversation with Scott and Christopher Nolan in LA following a Gladiator II screening, Scott said that his plans to work with Mescal again were up in the air due to his busy schedule, with him signed on to do the Beatles movies.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight last month, Beatles drummer Ringo Starr revealed that Barry Keoghan has been taking drumming lessons, with his understanding being that the Saltburn actor is portraying him in the movies.

Last month, Mescal was also quizzed about his involvement in the project during an appearance on The Jimmy Fallon Show. Though remaining tight-lipped, the Normal People star said it would be "an incredible story to be attached to".

"The fact that Sam Mendes is attached to direct, like truly, it would be a dream come true," he told the late night host, additionally refusing to confirm the McCartney rumours at the time.

Mescal's Gladiator II co-star Joseph Quinn is another name that has been rumoured for the Beatles project but not confirmed.

Gladiator II is out now in cinemas.
