There's bad news for fans of John Wick, as director Chad Stahelski has weighed in on whether there'll be a continuation of the saga beyond the critically acclaimed Chapter 4.

Ahead of the first film's tenth anniversary, the stuntman-turned-filmmaker said that if a fifth movie were to happen, it wouldn't undo the perfect, bittersweet ending of instalment number four.

"The honest truth is you don't [top John Wick: Chapter 4]. You simply don't," the co-creator told The Hollywood Reporter. "There's no topping what we did. That's the end. That's the deal. That's what we found closure for."

However, Stahelski admitted a fifth film is in active development, though he sees the workshopping phase more like "an exercise". He also clarified that a new John Wick movie wouldn't go along with fans' hopes and possibly focus on a different story.

"Sometimes, we'll use development as an exercise, but is there an opportunity to do [John Wick 5]? Of course, there is, whether it's for money or for creativity," he said, adding he's had "three or four" versions for a fifth movie.

What to Read Next

"So we have some really good ideas, and it would not be part of that [John Wick: Chapter 4] storyline. It would not be what you would think it is," he continued.

"If we could ever crack it to where Keanu [Reeves] and I thought it was a great idea and it didn't feel like a cheese-out, then that's great. But as far as [John Wick: Chapter 4], we've peaked. At least, I have. That's my apex.

"We ended it. It's a complete story. I watch it now, and I feel very happy about it, but we wouldn't try to outdo it. We wouldn't try to add on to that. It'd have to be a completely different storyline."

Meanwhile, the Baba Yaga himself, once again played by Keanu Reeves, is set to make an appearance in hotly anticipated spin-off Ballerina. In the movie, Ana de Armas portrays an assassin seeking vengeance after her family's death.

Whatever the fate of the movie saga, it seems Reeves isn't ready to abandon the John Wick universe just yet. He'll serve as producer in series John Wick: Under The High Table, set after the events of Chapter 4.

The John Wick movies are available to buy or rent on Prime Video, plus DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD.
