Roberto Orci is out as director of Star Trek 3.

The filmmaker will remain associated with the project strictly as a producer, according to Deadline.

A search for a new director is under way at Paramount Pictures, with Edgar Wright tipped as a leading contender thus far.

Orci had been scheduled to make his directorial debut on Star Trek 3, taking over the franchise from JJ Abrams.

Abrams exited as director following Star Trek Into Darkness in order to helm Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Orci's own commitment to Star Trek 3 facilitated his decision to drop out as director of the upcoming Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie.
