While it ranks as the second-lowest entry in the Mad Max series, it is worth noting that Mad Max and Mad Max 2 – which only sit marginally ahead at 90% and 93% – only have a small handful of reviews to base their scores on.

Here's what critics have been saying about Furiosa:

Digital Spy

"Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is not Mad Max: Fury Road. But it is another singular cinematic experience that needs to be witnessed."

The Daily Telegraph

"Cinema at its most soul-pricklingly primal. It's the sort of film that makes you feel like the past century of Hollywood might have been a detour, and the machine has now been hauled back on course."

Entertainment Weekly

"Furiosa has car chases and biker hordes and flaming death, but almost more impressive are the small moments of beauty that you won't find anywhere else."

Evening Standard

"It might not reach the heights of its predecessor, but Furiosa is [a] furious ride with three utterly watchable leads. Taylor-Joy has done Charlize Theron proud as this fabulous vengeful heroine."

Time Out

"Those hoping that Furiosa might up the ante from its ground-breaking predecessor might be left feeling disappointed – but that would be doing the film a disservice. This latest instalment feels contemporary and timely, with themes of resource-based conflict and endangered species."

CNN

"The movie's namesake is really less the star than the dystopian Wasteland that she must navigate, which serves as the backdrop for an undeniably muscular sensory assault that's a bit malnourished as an origin-story detour off Fury Road."
