The 83-year-old was apparently approached by the movie's producer JJ Abrams about making the return.

He also posted a tweet saying: "I'm baaaaccckk!!!" leading many to believe it was related to the news, although the actor has since deleted the tweet in apparent denial.

Shatner and Nimoy last appeared in a Star Trek movie together in 1991's Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, while Shatner's last appearance as Kirk was in 1994's Star Trek: Generations.

Abrams's 2009 Star Trek movie, which rebooted the series with Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto and Nimoy playing Spock across two timelines, originally featured a cameo for Shatner's Kirk in the script that was removed in rewrites.
