Universal has decided to shut down production indefinitely on Fast & Furious 7.

The move follows the recent passing of actor Paul Walker, who played Brian O'Connor in the franchise.

The studio released a statement saying: "Right now, all of us at Universal are dedicated to providing support to Paul's immediate family and our extended Fast & Furious family of cast, crew and filmmakers.

"At this time we feel it is our responsibility to shut down production on Fast & Furious 7 for a period of time so we can assess all options available to move forward with the franchise.

"We are committed to keeping Fast & Furious fans informed, and we will provide further information to them when we have it. Until then, we know they join us in mourning the passing of our dear friend Paul Walker."

Production on the film was already halfway through when the collision took place, with Walker and the rest of the cast scheduled to travel to Abu Dhabi to film additional scenes in January.

The 40-year-old actor was the passenger in a Porsche when former racer Roger Rodas lost control and hit a lamp post. The vehicle then burst into flames.

The Los Angeles county coroner's office has today (November 4) stated that the pair died of the combined effects of traumatic and thermal injuries. Both deaths were found to be accidental.
