Star Wars has confirmed a new movie focusing on The Mandalorian and Grogu.

The aptly-titled The Mandalorian & Grogu will be directed by original Mandalorian show creator Jon Favreau.

"I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created," he said. "The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting."

"Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen," added Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

The movie is set to start filming this year, though further details on the plot remain under wraps for now. The two characters are well known for appearing on the small screen in The Mandalorian, most recently in last year's third season.

The Mandalorian & Grogu is one of a number of big screen Star Wars projects in the pipeline, including a movie about Rey (starring a returning Daisy Ridley) directed by Ms Marvel's Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

There's also one about the early days of the Jedi directed by James Mangold, and a third set to be helmed by Ahsoka's Dave Filoni – the latter of whom was recently promoted to chief creative officer at Lucasfilm.

The first of these three is set to be released on May 22, 2026, though it's unclear which one will come first.

Meanwhile, last year Ridley teased her Rey movie, telling Collider: "I'm very excited. The story is really cool. I'm waiting to read a script because, obviously, I don't have any other updates. It's not what I expected, but I'm very excited."

The Mandalorian & Grogu will enter production this year, with a release date yet to be confirmed.
