Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will bring the two Titans stomping back onto our screens in April 2024.
The Godzilla vs Kong sequel was confirmed in March 2022 and marks the fifth MonsterVerse movie to date. Since Godzilla vs Kong's release in March 2021, the MonsterVerse has also expanded to include two TV shows.
Skull Island, an animated series set in the '90s, was released on Netflix in June 2023, and the next MonsterVerse outing will be Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, starting in November 2023.
What to Read Next
But let's focus on the next big screen outing for now: here's everything you need to know about Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Godzilla x Kong release date: When can we expect Godzilla vs Kong 2?
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was originally set for release on March 15, 2024, before being slightly delayed in August 2023 to a new release date of April 12, 2024.
The move was a result of Warner Bros shuffling its upcoming release calendar due to the ongoing writers' and actors' strikes. It's possible that this could lead to a further delay, but let's hope not.
Filming took place from July-November 2022.
Godzilla x Kong cast: Who's coming back for Godzilla vs Kong 2?
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will bring back Godzilla vs Kong stars Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry and Kaylee Hottle as Dr Ilene Andrews, Bernie Hayes and Jia.
As far as we know, the new movie won't see the returns of Millie Bobby Brown's Madison Russell, Kyle Chandler as Madison's dad Mark, or Alexander Skarsgård as Dr Nathan Lind.
All of them survived the events of Godzilla vs Kong, so it could just be that their comeback is being kept a surprise.
Newcomers to the MonsterVerse for Godzilla x Kong are Dan Stevens, Fala Chen, Alex Ferns and Rachel House.
For now, their roles are being kept under wraps, but Stevens has been described as the lead of the new movie.
Behind the scenes, Godzilla vs Kong's Adam Wingard returned to direct the new movie, which also brought back the previous movie's trio of writers: Terry Rossio, Simon Barrett and Jeremy Slater.
Godzilla x Kong plot: What's Godzilla vs Kong 2 about?
When the cast was confirmed as filming commenced, Warner Bros released the official synopsis for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, although it's very vague:
"This latest entry follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own," it reads.
"The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever."
The ending of Godzilla vs Kong saw the two Titans team up to take down Mechagodzilla, created by dodgy company Apex Cybernetic to take possession of the power source in Kong's home in the Hollow Earth, birthplace of all Titans.
Unsurprisingly, Mechagodzilla goes rogue and it takes the combined efforts of Godzilla and Kong to destroy it. It appears to create a mutual respect between the two Titans and Godzilla heads back to the ocean, while Kong goes to rule over the Hollow Earth.
It means there's not really much for the new movie to pick up on, but expect more Titan carnage and interconnected storylines with the wider MonsterVerse which is now, basically, the MCU with Titans.
Not that we're complaining.
