Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki has weighed in on the mystery of Noriko Ōishi's neck.

Towards the end of the kaiju blockbuster, it's revealed that Minami Hamabe's character somehow survived the city-levelling nuclear blast of Godzilla – left with only a black scorch of some kind on her neck.

While attending Osaka's Godzilla Fest, Yamazaki informed the crowd that these markings were indeed regenerative cells belonging to the atomic creature, confirming a fan theory (via IGN).

Whether the G-cells amount to anything in a potential Minus One sequel is yet to be seen, but if we look at the movie Godzilla vs Biollante, it's fascinating to see what can be done.

Released by Toho in 1989, the action film saw a scientist splicing his dead daughter's cells with a rosebud and a tiny piece of Godzilla, creating fellow monster Biollante.

Biollante's G-cells later collided with a black hole and gave us SpaceGodzilla.

Discussing the idea of a follow-up to his record-breaking movie with Empire Magazine, Yamazaki admitted he was "very curious" about Noriko and pilot Kōichi Shikishima's future.

"I would certainly like to see what the sequel would look like. I know that Shikishima's war seems over, and we've reached this state of peace and calm – but perhaps [it's the] calm before the storm, and the characters have not yet been forgiven for what has been imposed upon them," he said.

One concept he's wary of is Godzilla battling other beasts, though, as the filmmaker added: "When you have movies that feature [kaiju battles], I think it's very easy to put the spotlight and the camera on this massive spectacle, and it detaches itself from the human drama component."

Godzilla Minus One is streaming on Netflix.
