The Crown star Emma Corrin has revealed that they needed a "debrief" on the Marvel Cinematic Universe after signing on for Deadpool 3.

The actor was confirmed earlier this year to be joining the next outing for Ryan Reynolds's Merc with a Mouth, taking on the role of a villain.

However, in an interview with Empire conducted before the current SAG-AFTRA strike, Corrin explained that they were not wholly familiar with Marvel's output at the time.

"Hands up, I’m not a Marvel person," they said. "I’ve watched Spider-Man and Black Panther. I was like, ‘Look, you’re gonna have to debrief me into this’.

"It’s such an intricate world. There’s so much to it, it’s an absolute mind-f**k. All the language and the Easter eggs, and this person is related to that person who did this, and this person came back and this person’s dead… it’s amazing.

"I really understand why it means as much as it does to so many people. It’s a phenomenon, and I feel really lucky to be part of it. Especially Deadpool, because I love the fact that it’s self-aware, and critical of its own inner-workings."

The star also teased their role a bit, admitting: "I feel really excited to play a villain. I haven’t done that, and it’s an itch I want to scratch."

Opening up about being chosen for the part, Corrin revealed that they were cast when director Shawn Levy saw them on stage in a production of Orlando, though the reason for their meeting was kept secret.

"I’d heard about the project but, classic Marvel, they couldn’t tell me anything about it. Absolutely nothing. Zilch," they recalled. "So I met him being like, 'I don’t know what this is about'."

While fans of Corrin patiently wait for Deadpol 3, they can see the star in new mystery-thriller series A Murder At The End Of The World airing on FX on Hulu later this year.

Deadpool and Deadpool 2 are streaming on Disney+. Deadpool 3, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has a release date of May 3, 2024.
