Avatar: The Way of Water is now on Disney+ following a record-breaking run at the box office in late 2022 and early 2023.

James Cameron certainly had a lot to live up to after Avatar became the biggest movie of all time, and while the sequel didn't quite reach its predecessor, it still ended up with a massive haul.

At the end of its run, Avatar: The Way of Water managed to become the third highest-grossing movie of all time, behind only Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. It means Cameron has made three of the four biggest movies ever.

But how much exactly did Avatar 2 make? Here's the final tally:

US: $684,075,767

Overseas: $1,636,174,514

Global total: $2,320,250,281

Avatar remains the biggest movie of all time with a staggering $2.92 billion haul. It was briefly overtaken by Avengers: Endgame with $2.8 billion, before a re-release saw Avatar overtake that sum to regain its crown.

While few expected the sequel to reach those heights, the incredible performance of the sequel has ensured that Cameron will get to realise his full vision for the follow-up to the record-breaking first movie.

Avatar enjoyed an extraordinary run that saw it cross the $2 billion mark on January 31, 2010, 47 days after its release, before ending its initial release at $2.75 billion.

The sequel achieved the feat quicker at 38 days of release, but the first movie's haul was out of reach, ultimately. At least it can claim to have reached $2 billion quicker than the record-breaking first movie.

Now all eyes are on Avatar 3 to see if the threequel can live up to the box office standards of the first two movies.

When it comes to Cameron, you wouldn't bank against it.
