Emilia Clarke has landed her next lead movie role in An Ideal Wife.

The Game of Thrones actress is set to play Irish author, Constance Lloyd, who was married to fellow wordsmith Oscar Wilde, in what appears to be a biopic about her life, Variety reports.

Details of the project are being kept under wraps for now, but the movie is set to focus on Lloyd – who alongside her writing, was a feminist activist who campaigned for women’s rights.

One of her main initiatives argued that women should have the right to ditch their restrictive corsets and structured Victorian dresses for comfortable clothes.

But in 1895, Wilde was found guilty of gross indecency and sentenced to two years' hard labour in prison – the maximum sentence at the time – after his relationships with other men were made public. Same-sex relationships between men were illegal at the time.

After Wilde was sentenced, Lloyd and the children moved to Switzerland, where she started a new life without him.

This is one of several new projects Clarke has in the pipeline, as she prepares to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe next year in the Disney+ series, Secret Invasion.

She’ll join The Crown’s Olivia Colman and Peaky Blinders star Kingsley Ben-Adir as part of a cast that will also see Samuel L Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn return as Nick Fury and Talos.

Despite the excitement of joining another hit franchise, after her time in Star Wars and Game of Thrones, Clarke said she was scared about the level of secrecy with Marvel.

"I'm pretty sure we can say it's called Secret Invasion, but I'm already scared," Clarke told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show.

"The first people I spoke to from Marvel were their security team and I'm convinced there's a man outside my house — there's been a car parked there for a long time — and I swear to god, he's undercover."

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray. House of the Dragon season 1 airs on HBO in the US, and on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.
