Wonder Woman director's Star Wars movie has Disney release date dropped

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, the previously-announced movie from Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, has been taken off the release schedule by The Walt Disney Company.

The film, which takes its name from the critically-acclaimed video game series, was down to release on December 22, 2023. To hit that date, production would need to start any time now.

Since there's no replacement date, Variety reports, it does leave the status of the film up in limbo.

Disney has set out release dates for films through to the summer of 2024, and none of the other announced Star Wars films from Taika Waititi, Kevin Feige or Rian Johnson are dated either.

What we do have are recently-announced release dates for Waititi's sports comedy Next Goal Wins (April 21, 2023), The Haunted Mansion (August 11, 2023), animated film Wish (November 22, 2023), Pixar's Elio (March 1, 2024), the Snow White remake (March 22, 2024), Inside Out 2 (June 14, 2024) and Mufasa (July 5, 2024).

An unnamed Marvel movie has also been moved from February 16, 2024 to September 6, 2024.

Obviously, all of these release dates are subject to change, as some of them have. They are also US-specific, as the UK sometimes gets films from the House of Mouse a few days early.

There hasn't been a Star Wars film released in cinemas since 2019's The Rise of Skywalker came out to a poor reception, although it still performed very well at the box office.

The franchise has focused on its Disney+ shows in the interim, with Kenobi actually being a planned movie, or trilogy of movies, that was turned into a TV series.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and the entire Skywalker Saga are available on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K now, as well as on Disney+.
