Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star Lashana Lynch thought her surprise MCU return was "amazing".

In Sam Raimi's mind-bending sequel, Lynch's Captain Marvel character Maria Rambeau cameos as a member of Earth-838's Illuminati, whom Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch brutally dispatches during one standout scene.

Quizzed by Variety on what it was like to play in that superhero sandpit once again, the actress revealed: "[Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige told me a long time ago, way before the world knew what was happening with her, which was sad because I really enjoyed Captain Marvel and working with Brie [Larson] and everyone.

"But that's nice to have this moment for us, actually, for the culture; that was a twist and turn that we never expected.

"And we were watching WandaVision really happy that we get to see Monica [Rambeau's] backstory, but then this twist, these twists that Marvel puts on us without warning, my heart was like, 'The world's not gonna know what to do with themselves after this.' It was fantastic," she continued.

Back in February 2021, WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer explained why the show featured the death of Maria.

"I feel very strongly about Maria and her relationship with Monica. It's so much of a part of her character. But we really wanted to set Monica up, with a rough road really.

"And we wanted to dig into her character as best we can and be sort of concise with dropping the audience into where we are in the MCU timeline and letting them know what the tone of this episode is gonna be, that we're not messing around," she said.
