Minions: The Rise of Gru spoilers follow.
Minions: The Rise of Gru has been given a new ending in China.
The Despicable Me spin-off ends when Gru and his mentor Wild Knuckles drive off into the sunset with the minions in tow, ready to get up to all sorts of villainy.
However, in the Chinese version (via BBC News), viewers saw a series of still images with subtitles that explained Wild Knuckles was arrested and sent to jail, while Gru decided to become a good guy instead.
In jail, Wild Knuckles set up a theatre troupe and discovered a love of acting. Meanwhile, Gru is said to describe being a father to his three girls as his "greatest achievement".

Earlier this year, Chinese streaming service Tencent Video premiered a different version of Fight Club. The original ending where multiple buildings explode was changed to have the main character arrested by the authorities, sent to an asylum and eventually discharged.
This was changed back to its original film version following a public outcry (although the book the film is based on ironically has an ending similar to the altered version).
"In a way, the Chinese brought the movie back to the book a little bit," Fight Club's original author Chuck Palahniuk said.
"A lot of my overseas publishers have edited the novel so the novel ends the way the movie ends. So I've been dealing with this kind of revision for like 25 years."

The changed ending hasn't stopped the latest Minions movie from doing well at the Chinese box office, setting a record for an animated film's opening day since the pandemic began.
