Spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness follow.

Marvel has released details of a scrapped opening scene from the Doctor Strange sequel that had MCU's Baron Karl Mordo killed by Wanda Maximoff.

As revealed in the audio commentary of the film, directed by Sam Raimi, the scene would have seen Mordo decapitated by the Scarlet Witch. The Avenger-turned-villain would have later presented the head to Doctor Strange as a threat.

In the recently released Disney+ documentary Assembled: The Making of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there is behind-the-scenes footage showing Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Wanda, in action as she practiced choreography for the scene – Mordo would have cut off his own head with a sword under her influence.

That grisly scenario fortunately ended up on the cutting-room floor, but some concept art depicting what the scene would have looked like on screen also found its way on to Twitter.

The pictures show the characters facing off in Wanda's dark wasteland, surrounded by twisted, lifeless trees, with mist filtering the murky moonlight in the moments leading up to Mordo's death.

In the end, Earth-616's Mordo doesn't make an appearance in Multiverse of Madness. But Earth-838's Sorcerer Supreme version, played again by Chiwetel Ejiofor, is the only one to survive the dream-walking witch's attack.

Mordo was also not the only character to avoid a gruesome death scene in the Doctor Strange sequel.

An earlier script had meant to kill off a version of the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) that would have been part of the Illuminati alongside Mordo, a superhero group Strange meets on Earth-838.

"I think originally, the Wasp was in a version of the Illuminati, and the Wasp shrunk down and flew at Wanda, and [Wanda] just clapped her hands and smushed the Wasp in the first draft," screenwriter Michael Waldron said in the audio commentary.
