Avatar: The Way of Water star Stephen Lang has officially confirmed his return as Colonel Miles Quaritch in the long-awaited sequel.

The actor confirmed he would be returning as the same character whose mind has been uploaded into a Na'vi body. Up until now, it has been a mystery how the actor, who suffered a fatal injury in the first Avatar, would return.

Speaking to Empire, Lang said his character is back and that "he's bigger, he's bluer, he's pissed off."

Lang hinted that his villainous Colonel might have (slightly) changed his ways after coming to a brutal end in the first Avatar instalment.

"There may possibly be an aspect of humility. When you take two Na'vi arrows in the chest, that's gonna have some kind of effect on you," he said of his character.

However, he also seemingly hinted that Quaritch now has super-villain powers explaining: "But now he is as lithe as they come. He can move with the same kind of cunning and feral quality that any of the Na'vi can."

According to Empire, the sequel will feature plenty of RDA soldiers whose memories have been uploaded to avatars - known as Recoms (Recombinants).

In October 2013, it was announced that Stephen Lang would be returning despite being dead, which James Cameron reconfirmed in August 2017.

Cameron said that Quaritch would return for all four planned sequels saying: "There's not a new villain every time, which is interesting. Same guy. Same motherf**ker through all four movies."

In the recently-released Avatar 2 teaser trailer, fans spotted a Na'vi character that bears a striking resemblance to Quaritch.

He certainly looks bigger and bluer, and a bit pissed off.

Avatar: The Way of Water is released in cinemas on December 16, while Avatar is available to watch on Disney+.
