Lightyear has brought onto our screens and into our lives the most adorable robot cat ever.
After Sox made its debut as the techy, loyal companion of human-form Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story spin-off, a very legitimate question started circulating among fans.
If, within the Toy Story universe, Lightyear is the movie that prompted Andy to desperately want a Buzz toy, how come a Sox action figure – arguably the most obvious choice – is nowhere to be seen in the four movies of the franchise?

Lightyear director Angus MacLane had a suitably meta, adorably nerdy response to this burning question.
"Andy's mom could not get it," he said during a press conference with producer Galyn Susman and composer Michael Giacchino.

"It was sold out everywhere."
He then added: "That’s an expensive toy," saying: "It would have been like Worlds of Wonder or Tiger Electronic. It would’ve been like kind of a fancy, like a $70 toy."

MacLane and Giacchino compared a Sox action figure to the AT-AT Walker toy from The Empire Strikes Back, a rather expensive Star Wars toy first released in the 1980s and worth quite some money today.
Starring MCU's Chris Evans in the role of Buzz, Lightyear also features the voices of Orange Is The New Black star Uzo Aduba, Taika Waititi, Bill Hader and Keke Palmer, to name but a few.
A standalone movie, this sci-fi adventure might not have super strong ties with the original franchise, but it is a comedic, emotional ride with a hopeful message, as per our four-star review.
Lightyear is out in cinemas in the UK and US.
