Scream 6 signs up first new cast member

Scream 6 has brought Dermot Mulroney onboard, with filming set to kick off this month.

Recognised as Michael O'Neal in My Best Friend's Wedding and Sean Brenner in Insidious: Chapter 3, the actor joins returning franchise faces Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Jenna Ortega, Courteney Cox and Hayden Panettiere for another spin on the Ghostface merry-go-round.

Via The Hollywood Reporter, it's said that Mulroney will play a cop, most likely outside of Woodsboro, as the four Scream survivors opt for a change of scenery.

Back when the sixth movie in the slasher series was announced, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group shared in a statement: "We are tremendously grateful to the fans around the world who enthusiastically received our film.

"We can't wait for audiences to see what Radio Silence [directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett], writers Jamie [Vanderbilt] and Guy [Busick] and Project X [Entertainment] have in store for our Woodsboro family."

Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett themselves added: "Working with such a wonderful and talented family of creators – and in the lineage Wes [Craven] and Kevin [Williamson] so expertly built – has been the thrill of a lifetime and we're so excited to bring the next chapter in the Scream saga to life."

Returning screenwriters Vanderbilt and Busick were equally touched by this opportunity, commenting: "Is this real life? Getting to collaborate once again with our friends on the next instalment of the Scream story is more than we could have hoped for.

"We are overwhelmed that we get to continue to play in the sandbox that Kevin and Wes created. It is, as Ghostface would say, an honour."

Scream 6 comes to cinemas on March 31, 2023.
