Exciting news for Mad Max fans: Furiosa has just started production. The film will focus on the character of Furiosa, and will serve as a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road.
However, instead of using de-aging VFX to allow Charlize Theron to continue starring in the franchise, the film's titular role will be portrayed by Peaky Blinders star Anya Taylor-Joy. Furiosa is set to be released in 2024 and Marvel's Chris Hemsworth and Mank's Tom Burke will co-star with Taylor-Joy.
Last night, Chris Hemsworth posted a Tweet saying: "A new journey in the Mad Max saga begins." As of Thursday evening, this has gained a huge reaction of over 50K likes and 5k Retweets.
Filmmaker George Miller told Variety Furiosa is "a saga", as it has a much longer timeframe than the 2015 film. Unlike Mad Max: Fury Road, which spanned three days, Furiosa will take place over 15 years.
Jenny Beavan will come back as the movie's costume designer, after winning an Oscar for her work on Fury Road, but it looks like the character of Furiosa will have a slightly different look in the upcoming film.
Speaking with Variety, Beavan said Taylor-Joy was hoping to shave her head like Charlize Theron did, but "George doesn't want her to". Beavan added: "I don't know whether she will or not."

Despite his thoughts on her hair, Taylor-Joy has said the thing that excites her most about starring in the film is working with George Miller.
"That brain is incredible. I'm also really excited to do something physical. To physically become something else is something that will weirdly give me a lot of peace," she said.
Now that it has started production, Furiosa will be the largest feature film to ever be produced in Australia, and will reportedly create an estimated 850 jobs.
