Morbius 2 has still to be confirmed by Sony and, if we're being honest, it doesn't look like a sure thing.
Despite a solid debut, Morbius sank at the box office with only $167.5 million worldwide and even a re-release (following it becoming the subject of many memes) couldn't do enough to save the movie.
Matt Smith was pretty chill about the movie's underperformance. "It's a film, at the end of the day, we're not saving lives. For whatever reason, it didn't quite work out and… It is what it is," he said in August 2022.
Of course, if Sony wants a sequel, then it could still happen and the first movie certainly hints at a follow-up – and we're not just talking the potential of a Spider-Man crossover.
So here's everything you need to know about a potential Morbius 2, but be warned, there will be major spoilers ahead for Morbius.
Morbius 2 potential release date: When can we expect Morbius 2?
As mentioned above, Morbius 2 has yet to be confirmed so there isn't an official release date as of yet.
What to Read Next
Sony has a busy couple of years ahead for its Marvel projects, starting with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on June 2, 2023, so it's tricky to see where the sequel can fit in right now.
Fellow Spider-Man spin-off Kraven the Hunter is set to follow on October 6, 2023, then El Muerto on January 12, 2024 and Madame Web on February 16, 2024. There's also an undated, but confirmed, Venom 3 to come.
Even if it was confirmed, it's likely we'll have to wait until at least 2024 for Morbius 2 to arrive if it gets confirmed. We'll update this if we hear anything though.
Morbius 2 cast: Who could come back for Morbius 2?
As Morbius 2 has yet to be confirmed, there's no official casting announcements, but we feel we're safe in saying that we'd see Jared Leto back as Dr Michael Morbius.
He'll likely be joined by Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft who has now been transformed into a vampire (more on that in a bit). However, Matt Smith's Milo and Jared Harris's Dr Nicholas won't return as they're both properly killed in Morbius.
Tyrese Gibson's Simon Stroud is a familiar foe to Morbius in the comics, so we'd expect to see him back too, alongside Al Madrigal as Stroud's FBI partner Alberto Rodriguez. According to Gibson, he has a three-movie deal, so Stroud could pop up elsewhere too.
Michael Keaton's Adrian Toomes popped up in the credit scenes for Morbius, so assuming he's not transported back to the MCU, he'll likely be hanging around for the sequel. Toomes proposes a team-up with Morbius, which opens up Sinister Six possibilities.
Could a sequel feature Morbius teaming up with (or battling against) the likes of Tom Holland's Spider-Man or Tom Hardy's Venom? Anything could technically happen, but whether it does remains to be seen.
Director Daniel Espinosa is tight-lipped about exactly which Spider-Man exists in this world, following fans believing that it could well be Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man.
"There are people at Sony that will have me shot [for saying anything] because then I will force them to commit to something," he joked to IGN. "I have my thoughts and opinions and they are in the movie, and that's what I'm pushing for."
He has confirmed that a Spider-Man exists in this universe and with Holland's Spidey still currently in the MCU, it could be anybody.
Morbius ending explained: How is Morbius 2 set up?
There are two key plot threads that Morbius 2 could pick up on: Martine Bancroft's 'death' and Vulture's Sinister Six tease.
Let's start with Martine. In order to lure Morbius into a battle with him, Milo kidnaps Martine and just before Morbius arrives, Milo fatally attacks Martine to leave her dying for him to find.
To make her death "mean something", Morbius drinks from Martine and we assume that's it for her. However, after Morbius defeats Milo and kills him with the antibody he created, we cut back to the rooftop where Martine's body is and we see her open her eyes.
Comic book fans will know that Martine undergoes such a transformation, both into a living vampire like Morbius and also a "True Vampire" which is more in line with the traditional vampires.
It's unclear which vampire Martine has turned into, but it spells trouble ahead for the couple as in the comics, Martine meets a tragic end when Morbius is forced to kill her to stop her from biting Spider-Man.
Arjona doesn't know exactly what the future holds, but is excited to see what's next for her character.
"Now that she has turned, I want to know if she goes more towards good or bad. Or does she have trouble finding the middle ground? What happens to her? I'm just curious. I'm as curious as the fans will be," she told The Hollywood Reporter.
The first movie only took inspiration from the comics rather than be a straight adaptation of any particular story. If the sequel happens, we assume that the story will again be inspired by the comics, but will otherwise be an original story.
Now for the second major plot point left dangling. In the credit scenes, Vulture suggests to Morbius that a "bunch of us guys should team up". He proposes they "do some good", but we feel he means more villainous things as the Sinister Six.
There's no other appearances from established villains or antiheroes like Tom Hardy's Venom or Michael Mando's Scorpion in Morbius. It means that we don't quite know which characters will make up this universe's version of the supervillain team.
With Morbius now established and Kraven the Hunter to come in his own movie, expect more crossovers in a potential Morbius 2. It could well end up being more of a team-up movie like Captain America: Civil War, rather than a direct Morbius sequel.
Espinosa told Variety that Norman Osborn would be a good fit for a team-up with Morbius if Sony wanted to do a twist on the Sinister Six. "There are other possibilities, because it's been made for so many years," he added.
"For me, what Kevin Feige made so brilliant was the way they took many of the mythologies and chose different parts of them and the realisation that it doesn't have to start just like the comics started."
Morbius 2 trailer: Any Morbius 2 footage yet?
Of course not. As mentioned, Morbius 2 has yet to be confirmed, so it hasn't started filming and any new footage will be a long way off.
