They say three (web)heads are better than one, which leads to a somewhat confusing conundrum for Spider-Man: No Way Home.
By now, most fans have come to expect the upcoming threequel will bridge the gap between generations and bring a smorgasbord of spiders to our lives with the return of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, alongside Tom Holland's lead.
Despite what the stars and studio bosses keep telling us, it doesn't take Eddie Brock's investigative skills to figure out someone might be telling fibs. While the latest No Way Home trailer once again refused to confirm the rumours, eagle-eyed Spider-Man fans think they've spotted hard evidence a trifecta of Spider-Men is on the way.
The latest trailer has been put under some Ant-Man sized scrutiny, and thankfully it might have paid off.
In the second trailer, there's a dramatic battle sequence where Holland's version of Web-Head goes up against Jamie Foxx's Electro, as well as (what we assume) is Thomas Haden Church's Sandman and Rhys Ifans' Lizard.
This would be a tough battle for anyone, which means some think Sony has edited Garfield and Maguire out of the scene.
What to Read Next
As well as the heights of the villains matching up with them facing multiple heroes at different levels on the scaffolding, the Brazilian trailer has a very interesting 'mistake'.
Although we see Holland's Spidey jumping toward Sandman, a seemingly invisible foe sucker-punches Lizard at the 55-second mark.
Check it out below:
No Way Home may have held back on adding three generations of Spider-Man to the cast, but it's interesting that villains from all three eras are included.
Given that Lizard appeared in Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man, most think it's Garfield's Spider-Man that's been edited out here.
Then again, it looks like Holland's hero is tackling Sandman from the Sam Raimi days, and let's remember Electro also appeared during Garfield's tenure.
Sceptics have pointed out that it could easily be a confirmed character like Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange doing the pummelling. However, things line up just a little too neatly for many, especially as Electro appears to be jumping at... nobody?
If that wasn't enough tin foil hat theorising for one day, others have pointed to a clever callback that appears elsewhere in the trailer. Echoing the moment Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy met her maker in 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, we see Zendaya's MJ falling to her impending doom.
The shot cuts to Spider-Man's hand reaching toward her to save the day, but what if it's not the MCU's Spidey grabbing his bae? There would definitely be a sense of poetic justice if Garfield's Peter Parker was unable to save Gwen in his universe, but rescues MJ in this one.
Two out of three ain't bad, but what about Maguire? Despite it being harder to pinpoint moments the OG (for many) Peter fits into the puzzle, that doesn't mean the second trailer doesn't do some serious groundwork.
Alfred Molina's Doctor Otto Octavius snags Spider-Man, only to pull off his mask and say, "You're not Peter Parker". In the first trailer, there was the now-iconic line of, "Hello Peter" and it could be that these two moments take place at completely different points of the movie.
It just wouldn't be a reunion if Maguire doesn't get to face off against the villain of what is arguably the strongest entry to his Spider-Man series. We also see Green Goblin soaring over the city on his glider, so we've got to see noughties Spider-Man get a rematch with a cackling Willem Dafoe.
Since the first trailer ended with the shocking reveal Doc Ock would officially be back in action, theorists have been digging deep to find even the smallest hint that Garfield and Maguire are also suiting up to take on the Sinister Six – well, Foul Five at the moment.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a master of trailer deception, for instance when Hulk was on the Wakanda battlefield in Avengers: Infinity War, or even when Holland's Spider-Man was edited out of Captain America: Civil War's Super Bowl trailer.
Then to a smaller extent where locations and Thor's missing eye were changed in Thor: Ragnarok promo clips. So, we've learned not to 100% trust the trailers.
Even if those at the top are refusing to give a spandex-clad trio the official No Way Home nod, that December release date can't come soon enough.
The question is though: where were they hiding Matt Murdock?
Spider-Man: No Way Home is released in UK cinemas on December 15 and in US cinemas on December 17.
