Marvel's The Falcon and the Winter ended with Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson taking on the mantle of Captain America, and the finale was followed by reports that a fourth Cap movie is in development.

Mackie himself has played down the rumours linking him to the role in the film, telling Variety during an interview conducted in May shortly after the reports broke that "I didn't get a call or email – nothing".

The actor said that he first heard about the movie from a checkout worker while out shopping, recalling: "So I'm standing in line, and he's like, 'Yo, so is this real?'

"He knew the whole break down of everything before I did. I hadn't heard anything. I'm like, 'Dude, you got breaking news in the grocery store!'"

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier boss and apparently Captain America 4 co-writer Malcolm Spellman has also denied the rumours, recently asking: "Who said it? Did Kevin (Feige) say it?

Of course, this isn't the first time people involved with Marvel Studios projects have denied the existence of something that has gone on to happen, so we'll just have to wait and see.
