Wait, what?

Spider-Man 3, the third solo movie starring Tom Holland following Homecoming and Far From Home, is apparently going to bring back Jamie Foxx as Electro, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Why is that so weird? Well, Foxx previously played the character in 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which starred Andrew Garfield as Spidey, was in a totally different continuity to the Marvel Cinematic, and had no input from Marvel Studios at all.

Now, they kind of did this before by casting JK Simmons as the MCU's J Jonah Jameson in Far From Home's mid-credits scene, but his interpretation of the character was such a beloved part of the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man films, which themselves were beloved (well, the first two). Foxx's Electro and the Amazing films are very much not beloved.

But, looking at the bigger picture, this might be them doing some kind of live-action Into the Spider-Verse. Sony is currently making films starring Spidey villains, such as Venom and Morbius, which it has said could feature Holland's Spider-Man.

Furthermore, the Morbius trailer featured what looked like Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man and Michael Keaton reprising his Homecoming role.

If this is what Sony and Marvel are going for, we should expect to see a lot more role reprisals, and we're personally hoping for the best villains to come back: Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin and Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus.

Interestingly, the only MCU thing coming out this year is the Disney+ series WandaVision, which is based on comic storylines involving multiple realities... Hmmmmmm.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is available now on DVD, Blu-ray and digital download. A third Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland has a release date of December 17, 2021.
