X-Men: Dark Phoenix has been named the biggest box office flop of 2019.
The superhero outing, which starred the likes of Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence, topped the list in Deadline's biggest blockbuster bombs round-up of the last year.
According to the publication, the movie lost 20th Century Fox, and thereby new owners Walt Disney Company, a hefty $133 million (£107.1m). It's estimated that the film – which was directed by series veteran Simon Kinberg and ambitiously tried to adapt Marvel Comics' Jean Grey-centred Dark Phoenix Saga – cost more than $200 million to make.

Upon its release on June 2019, Dark Phoenix was met with scathing reviews, which saw critics brand it as "deeply disappointing" and "stupendously dull".
The negative reaction came as a real blow to fans too, considering it was Fox's swansong before the House of Mouse took over the rights to the titular mutants and their future on the big screen after 20 years.

Tom Hooper's CGI-heavy interpretation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats came third with a loss of $113.6 million. Not even its ground-breaking digital fur technology or its star-studded cast including Idris Elba, Ian McKellen, Jason Derulo, Jennifer Hudson and Judi Dench could get those bums in cinema seats, evidently.
Finally, Will Smith's sci-fi action movie Gemini Man and Missing Link, the latest animation from the studio that brought audiences ParaNorman and Coraline, rounded out the list with $111.1m and $101.3m respective losses.
