Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi responds to Star Wars movie rumours

With Thor: Ragnarok, the Oscar-nominated Jojo Rabbit and an episode of The Mandalorian under his belt, it seemed like a matter of time until Taika Waititi would be offered the opportunity to direct his own Star Wars movie – and that possibility may now be edging closer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the director has been approached to develop a new adventure in a galaxy far, far away, although it's not yet clear what that will be.

And rather than confirm or deny the news, Waititi decided to acknowledge it by simply tweeting a picture of the artwork for Fleetwood Mac's iconic Rumours album on Thursday evening (January 16).

Thanks for that, Taika. Really helpful.

It's currently unclear if Waititi would be working on the same Star Wars project being developed by Marvel's Kevin Feige, or something entirely separate.

Of course, after directing the final episode of The Mandalorian – the hit Disney+ series following the adventures of a bounty hunter – Waititi now has some crucial Star Wars directing experience, leaving him in a solid position to work on a feature-length film.

At the moment, it's looking like The Mandalorian could be acting as a bit of a testing ground for directors to move onto bigger Star Wars projects.

Deborah Chow became the first ever woman to direct something in the franchise when she shot two episodes of The Mandalorian. She's now directing the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off series.

While Star Wars might be getting a bit of a break after The Rise of Skywalker, Disney and Lucasfilm are certainly not done mining the franchise for all it's worth.

Still to come are the aforementioned Feige movie and Obi-Wan series, a second season of The Mandalorian, a Cassian Andor series, and Rian Johnson's spin-off trilogy.
